“What happens when you’re young, molds you for life. Yes, but great love can transform you”

MONTREAL January 8, 2014 -‐ The company that created the hit show Poutine Masala brings a tale about a teenage sex worker, set in the bustling Mumbai slums of Kamathipura, India’s biggest red light district. Deepali Productions in collaboration with Infinitheatre, presents the world premier of Wake, Butterfly by Vishesh Abeyratne, directed by Deborah Forde and featuring two of Montreal’s finest local actors. Wake, Butterfly will be presented at Theatre Bain St. Michel, for three performances only, from January 23 to 25.

Wake Butterfly features two women: In Montreal, Laura has led a protected but demanding life. A rebel to the core, she makes choices that lead her in a downward spiral, until she reaches rock bottom. In Bombay’s red light district, a girl is living as a prostitute in a brothel, finally rescued, only to be abused by her rescuer. Both these women end up in a place between life and death. As they spend time with each other, their inner worlds collide and they struggle to make the hardest decision of their lives. Wake, Butterfly is a stirring and fast-‐paced play that uses storytelling, theatre and dance in a creatively designed and intimate setting.

“For me, Wake, Butterfly is more than about what choice you have or not, it is about what you learn from where life brings you and where do you go from there. I strongly believe that art is a great gift but also a great responsibility. Thus in the last 10 years, living in 3 countries, I have striven to create artistic projects that promote a cause be the vehicle of change or just inform.”
