At the centre of this classic ballet is the bayadère, Nikiya. Although she has been “married” to a deity and must spend her life serving this deity with rituals, acts of worship and dancing, Nikiya loves Solor, a noble warrior, and is desired by a High Brahmin in the temple. The events that follow – lust, betrayal, death and revenge – are inevitable, but when the gods unleash their vengeance, the bonds of eternal love are unbroken.
