ICKamsterdam (Netherlands) presents

ROCCO

In a ring surrounded by spectators, dancers as supple, committed and vigorous as boxers engage in close quarter combat in a choreography that is both visceral and elegant. A captivating portrayal of the spectrum of viable relations between men.

“The balletic bouts of speedy steps, jabbed limbs and torqued torsos are choreographed in strict rotational symmetry and tied to the arrhythmic jitters of a percussive score. Rocco is strong on mood and atmosphere…” (The Guardian, London)

“A theatrical knockout.” (Trouw Amsterdam)

Anchored in the taste for extremes and innovation, the success of the Italian choreographer Emio Greco and the Dutch director Pieter C. Scholten has been meteoric and enduring. The powerful theatricality of the body and their mutant, visceral, elegant movement are embodied in this work, which was honoured with the 2012 Golden Swan award for the most impressive dance production. They seat the audience around a boxing ring for combat inspired by the great Luchino Visconti film Rocco and his Brothers. From brotherly scuffles to close quarter body blows, they portray the range of male relations and behaviour with humour and sensuality in a series of duos presented by four supple, committed, vigorous and reactive dancers who are perfect as boxers. An extraordinary, poignant atmosphere. Inimitable style.
